New York Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez takes a curtain call after hitting his 661st home run and surpassing Willie Mays on the all-time home runs list in the third inning of a baseball game at Yankee Stadium in New York, Thursday, May 7, 2015.

We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have restarted with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

New York Yankees plus-170 at Toronto Blue Jays: $250 to win $425

The Blue Jays probably win this game. Is their win expectancy approximately 64 percent as this line implies?

That’s where I’d back off. The Yankees are still convinced they can win the American League East and come into tonight’s game with some spunk.

They beat the Blue Jays 6-4 last night to climb within 1.5 games of the lead in the division. Everyone is dismissive of New York’s chances, with Toronto looking like the best team in the majors over the last two months, but that’s exactly when it’s profitable to go contrarian.

Toronto starter Marcus Stroman has pitched quite well in two starts since returning from a knee injury, but that remains a particularly small sample. He’s probably better than New York starter Ivan Nova, who lost his rotation spot before getting the call tonight with Masahiro Tanaka hurt, but not by this much.

I wish I could say I have nothing else to lose with my pitiful Play of the Day performance, but that’s not entirely accurate. A true statement is that I need to take some risks to start the long climb back into contention.

The Yankees are a perfect place to start.
