Vegas Play of the Day: Pirates at Padres

We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have re-started with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

Pittsburgh Pirates minus-135 at San Diego: $540 to win $400: Full disclosure: The Pittsburgh Pirates are my favorite team, meaning my assessment of tonight’s game at the San Diego Padres might not be an objective take.

Pittsburgh’s Francisco Liriano, who has 13 strikeouts in 11 innings over two starts and a 2.45 earned run average, should have limited struggles against San Diego’s awful lineup. The Padres lead baseball with 128 strikeouts in 13 games, or an average of nine strikeouts a game. That’s why the Friars have a 4-9 record, including 0-9 record when scoring less than four runs. Tonight’s over-under total is seven, meaning oddsmakers don’t expect much offense. Advantage, Pittsburgh.

San Diego starts Colin Rea, who enters with a 5.56 earned run average and surrendered five runs in three innings April 8 against Colorado.

The Pirates had Monday off to travel west to start a long road trip. They’ll be focused opening the trip with a victory, looking to build on a modest two-game winning streak. All signs point to betting the Bucs.

Current Standings (as of July 1): (45-35-2, $12,670), Bern (30-35, $7,315), Keefer (42-53-2, $6,340)

Lifetime standings: 2014-15 Champion (109-109-1), Brewer (114-122-4), Keefer (125-135-4)
