Vegas Play of the Day: Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals

We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have re-started with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

Pittsburgh Penguins plus-105 at Washington Capitals: $940 to win $987

These are the two best teams in hockey, and it would feel like an injustice if the series couldn’t make it to at least six and preferably seven games. The Penguins need to steal one in Verizon Center to ensure that happens.

Why not here? Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan is correct in saying game 1 “could have went either way,” before Washington won in overtime despite a 45-35 shot disadvantage.

Game 2 is going to be just as close, so there’s no reason the Capitals should be sitting as a slightly bigger favorite at the moment. Washington did have a historic regular season, but down the stretch Pittsburgh has played even better.

The playoffs have been no different, with the Penguins dispatching the Rangers in five games, one quicker than the Capitals managed with the weaker Flyers. Home-ice advantage has played no major factor in the playoffs so far, and the Penguins will likely come into this game as the most desperate team.

They might even be the better team.
