Vegas Play of the Day: Padres at Mets

We’ve entered the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

New York Mets minus-175 vs. San Diego Padres: $875 to win $500: I was shocked when looking at today’s betting board to see that Padres’ starting pitcher Clayton Richard still had big-league employment. The Mets have struggled in the past week offensively, but should break out of it today against Richard.

He has just three starts since 2015, working mostly out of the bullpen with the Chicago Cubs the past two seasons. He was released this summer by Chicago. He has just 22 strikeouts in 46 innings pitched this season, meaning the Mets will be putting the ball in play all afternoon. And, since his stamina isn’t up to par, Richard likely won’t pitch past the fourth inning, forcing San Diego to bring in relief pitchers.

Matz has been up and down all season, but pitched seven scoreless innings earlier in the week against the Indians. With San Diego breaking in many inexperienced players in the final two months of the season, Matz should continue the dominance.

Yes, laying $175 to win $100 is a risk and there is little value. But the Mets seem pretty safe today.

Current Standings: Brewer (6-6, $10,245), Keefer (5-4, $10,120), Bern (4-6, $9,570)
