Vegas Play of the Day: Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

We’re entering the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

Los Angeles Angels minus-110 vs. Seattle Mariners: $440 to win $400

Since we’re now well past the point of not having a big enough sample to prove I have no business handicapping baseball, I’m going to take a different approach today. This is a straight contrarian play.

It’s not often you see a pick’em game with more than 80 percent of the action on one side. That’s what’s happening today ahead of a series wrap-up between divisional rivals at Angel Stadium.

Everyone is on the Mariners, and I don’t quite get it. Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma has had a better year than Angels starter Matt Shoemaker, but there’s no major advantage on the mound.

All three games in the series have come down to a single run. This should be another close one, and in that case, I’ll take the home team that everyone is discounting.

Current Standings: Brewer (7-7, $10,345), Keefer (5-5, $9,720), Bern (4-6, $9,570)
