Vegas Play of the Day: Arizona Cardinals at San Diego Chargers

Chargers-Jaguars

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers throws a pass Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, against the Jacksonville Jaguars during the first half of an NFL game in Jacksonville, Fla.

We’re entering the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

San Diego Chargers minus-1 vs. Arizona Cardinals: $330 to win $300

The NFL preseason is too early to be wagering on football as far as I’m concerned, but I can’t imagine forcing another baseball play, so here we are. If either team is going to play their starters for a longer period of time tonight, it’s the Chargers.

That alone is enough reason to back them with a diminished point spread at home against the Cardinals. Arizona’s prospects for the season remain higher, but it’s a common betting mistake to conflate that outlook with how it will play in the preseason.

The Cardinals didn’t look very intimidating in a 31-10 loss to the Raiders in their first preseason game last week. The Chargers weren’t any better in a 27-10 loss at Tennessee.

But more is unsettled in San Diego going into the season, and with that many position and roster battles, I’m more willing to bet on the Chargers putting forth a stronger effort tonight. It beats betting on baseball.

Current Standings: Brewer (7-7, $10,345), Keefer (6-5, $10,120), Bern (4-6, $9,570)
