Vegas Play of the Day: Chicago Cubs at Washington Nationals

Cubs-Diamondbacks

Ross Franklin / AP

The Chicago Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo, left, scores a run as Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Welington Castillo watches during the first inning of a baseball game Saturday, April 9, 2016, in Phoenix.

We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have re-started with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

Washington Nationals plus-120 vs. Chicago Cubs: $825 to win $990

Oh, no. My current position in Play of the Day is both where I wanted to be and what I was afraid of.

I’ve gone on a mini-run to make a late coup at least possible, but left with mostly only baseball to make it possible. I’ve neither wagered on baseball all season nor paid that close of attention.

But I know enough to realize these are the two best teams in the league. And I don’t think the gap is as wide as it’s been over the first third of the season.

The Nationals are only a few wins back record-wise, but the Cubs’ run differential is nearly twice as strong. That’s going to even out, perhaps starting with this three-game series.

I picked the Nationals to win the World Series at the beginning of the year, and see no reason to turn back now. It might be against the best team in the league, but I would blindly back this team as a decently priced home underdog.
