Vegas Play of the Day: Rockies at Diamondbacks

We’ve entered the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

Arizona Diamondbacks minus-130 vs. Colorado Rockies: $390 to win $300: The final month of the MLB season is always tough to predict. The betting price for teams in contention for a playoff spot is usually so high that there’s no value in making a wager. And for games with teams simply playing out the season, it’s a spring training atmosphere. It’s tough to predict which players will be in the lineup.

With that said, a small play on the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight against the Colorado Rockies may have some value. Colorado starter Jeff Hoffman has a 5.72 earned run average in four starts of his big-league career, getting his first go-round against major league batters in the home stretch of the season.

Part of the reason Hoffman has a 0-3 record is he’s struggling to post strikeouts. He has eight punch-outs in 16 innings worked, meaning the ball is constantly being put in play. Unless Arizona hitters put the ball in play directly at Colorado fielders, it will be a long hit for the Rockies.

Current Standings: Bern (10-7, $11,692), Brewer (10-9, $10,105), Keefer (11-10-1, $9,721)
