Vegas Play of the Day: Clemson at Georgia Tech

Clemson-NC State

Clemson’s Wayne Gallman, left, runs as North Carolina State’s Airius Moore, right, pursues Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015, during the first half of an NCAA college football game in Raleigh, N.C.

We’re entering the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

Clemson minus-9.5 at Georgia Tech: $330 to win $300

Ready for the most hackneyed piece of analysis you’ll see on this game? This just feels like a spot where Clemson should win going away, by at least two touchdowns.

I feel like I should apologize for not coming up with something more insightful, but that really encapsulates why I’m taking the Tigers here. Clemson has struggled enough in its two games against FBS opponents — beating Troy and Auburn by six points each — that everyone is questioning if it has any chance of getting back to last year’s level.

The Tigers’ sluggish start to the season has kept the betting market from overwhelmingly backing them and pushing this spread into inflated territory. But those were only two games.

The sample of 15 games from last year should still account for a larger portion of the evaluation. Clemson’s ACC opener feels like the perfect place for it to return to form.

The Tigers even had an extra week to prepare. They played South Carolina State last week, winning 59-0, and I can’t be convinced that the coaches weren’t sneaking in parts of defending Georgia Tech’s triple option during practice.

Clemson did a terrific job last year, holding Georgia Tech to 1.7 yards per rushing attempt. It will similarly shut down the Yellow Jackets on the road tonight.

Current Standings: Bern (11-8, $11,467), Brewer (11-10, $10,305), Keefer (12-10-1, $10,021)
