Vegas Play of the Day: Marlins and Mariners

Felix Hernandez

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Felix Hernandez throws against the Tampa Bay Rays in the fourth inning of a baseball game, Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, in Seattle.

We’re entering the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015. Bern stepped away in the middle of the 2016-2017 season with a 16-12 record and $13,317 bankroll, with Mike Grimala taking his place.

Florida Marlins plus-150 at Seattle Mariners: $500 to win $750 : Three Florida pitchers limited Seattle batters to one hit last night, a trend that will carryover to this afternoon’s game. Seattle hitters have a .220 batting average for the season, which ranks 23rd in MLB. The Marlins, meanwhile, rank sixth in batting average at .261 and seventh in runs scored.

Seattle is starting its ace Felix Hernandez, who shouldn’t intimidate Florida backers. The 31-year-old is a shell of his former self and no longer one of the game’s dominating pitchers. He’s still getting respect with oddsmakers, though, and that makes the Marlins a team worth betting at an attractive plus-money price.

Current Standings: Grimala (7-11, $8,233), Brewer (29-28-1, $7,985), Keefer (41-35-3, $7,867), Granger (13-18-1, $7,727)
