Vegas Play of the Day: Celtics at Cavs

Irving

In this Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, file photo, Boston Celtics’ Kyrie Irving leaves a news conference in Boston.

We’re entering the fourth season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won back-to-back titles in the 2015-2016 and 2016-17 seasons, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

Boston Celtics plus-4 at Cleveland, $660 to win $600: In a long NBA season, it’s rare to get a matchup of equally well-rested teams. It’s even more rare to get a regular season game that’s meaningful.

Tonight’s season opener between Boston and host Cleveland is significant for the Celtics, which makes them a great value bet at plus-4. Boston’s Kyrie Irving makes his return to Cleveland and will be motivated to put on a show during a nationally televised game. He’ll try to beat Cleveland by himself.

Cleveland, the favorites to again reach the NBA Finals, likely will be without LeBron James. He’s a game-time decision with a leg injury, and Cleveland won’t risk more injury to the game’s best player in the first night of the season, regardless of the opponent.

Even if Cleveland loses, its players know they have the better team moving forward. And in the past three seasons since James’ return to the Cavs, they have started slowly. There are many ups and down in an 82-game season, which makes tonight less important for everyone involved with one exception — Irving.

Current Standings: Granger (7-7, $11,475), Keefer (11-8-1, $10,781), Grimala (5-6, $8,715), Brewer (10-11, $8,330)
