Vegas Play of the Day: NBA all-star game

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

NBA All-Star game, Total Over 312, $550 to win $500: There is little defense played in the NBA All-Star game, which is essentially an exhibition played at fast-pace with plenty of highlight-reel style plays. There will be many dunks, 3-pointers and flashy passing.

The final of last year’s game, which featured many of the same players as this year, was 148-145, or 293 points. That’s about 20 points less than the established total for this year’s game, which helps provide great value for total-over bettors in 2019 because last year’s final isn’t the norm for this showcase.

In 2016, the final was 196-173. In 2017, it was 192-182. A similar result this year would cover the points total by more than 50 points.

Current Standings: Keefer (26-24-2, $10,906), Brewer (16-15-2, $10,410), Emerson (3-3, $6,842), Grimala (15-16-1, $3,650)
