USM Spires Linebacker and Las Vegas Native Named KCAC Defensive Football Player of the Week
Published on Tue, Oct 23, 2012 (7:49 a.m.)(Leavenworth, Kan.)—Spires senior linebacker Cris Basch earned Defensive Football Player of the Week honors from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference for helping to lead the USM defense to a dominant performance in a conference win last week.
Basch, from Las Vegas, was recognized for recording 11 total tackles (9 solo), 2.5 tackles for loss, and 0.5 sacks in USM’s 45-7 win over Southwestern College on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Spires defense held Southwestern to under 200 yards of total offense.
“This was Cris’ best game of the season,” said USM Head Football Coach Lance Hinson. “He was physical and very disciplined in his assignments. He led the defense statistically on a day that they played lights out. Cris is very deserving of this honor.”
Basch currently leads the Spires with an average of just under eight tackles per game this season—good for 13th overall in the conference.
The Spires Football Team is currently 3-3 in conference play and 3-5 overall on the season. The team next takes the field on the road against conference opponent McPherson College at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.
Saint Mary has 12 varsity sports programs—football, volleyball, baseball, softball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, cross country, and track & field—along with co-ed cheerleading and dance. Visit www.gospires.com to learn more about USM athletics.
