Families Getting Fit While Raising Funds For School

Calvary Chapel Spring Valley’s "Couch to 5K" program culminates Saturday, April 20, 2013 with the second-annual Running With the Lions 5K. The event, which serves as the finale for a church and school-wide fitness program, is also a fundraiser for Calvary Chapel Christian School.
Runners and walkers of all levels and ages are invited to participate in either the 5K or untimed one-mile fun walk.
Calvary Chapel Christian School students ranging from elementary to high school grades began a "Couch to 5K" training program in their P.E. classes that coincides with a weekly church-wide fitness program held each weekend. Both students and community members receive nutritional counseling, trainers and motivational speakers. For many, the Running With the Lions 5K will be their first official race.
The run will begin and end at the Calvary Chapel Christian School athletic field, 7175 W. Oquendo Drive, and medals will be awarded to best overall finishers, as well as the first three winners in age and gender categories. All registered children who are 12 and under will receive their own finisher medal. Event proceeds will benefit the athletic and academic programs of Calvary Chapel Christian School.
According to First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” program, childhood obesity has increased by over 30 percent in the past three decades and Calvary Chapel Christian School’s athletic director, David Tautofi, has worked with the school’s physical education teachers to develop a program that will train students to not only be able to finish the 3.1 mile race, but to also make lifestyle changes to prevent them being a part of this rising statistic.
Immediately following the race, there will be an expo and vendor fair featuring live music, children’s activities, smoothies from Tropical Smoothie, haircuts and neck massages from Sport Clips, food trucks and exciting raffle baskets.
This year Calvary Chapel Spring Valley will incorporate a “Community Church Picnic” after the race and expo.
The event is open to the public and registration is available at www.active.com. Adult registration is $35 and $25 for children. All participants registered prior to April 11, 2013 will receive a dri-fit athletic wear shirt with their paid registration.
