Non-Profit Brings Rock Concert to Local Schools to Promote Education, Healthy Lifestyles

Published on Sun, Jan 12, 2014 (2:58 p.m.)

The non-profit, Music Makes Music, in conjunction with ambassador band, Going Second, will present rock concert assemblies to local middle school students, promoting the importance of education, staying drug-free, and musical involvement.

The full rock show provides students in the school’s band, orchestra, and/or choir programs with the opportunity to perform alongside Going Second members: Ferril Davis, vocals; Mike Crowder, lead guitar; Chris Saul, bass guitar; Thomas Sienko, rhythm guitar; and Nik Ferrari, drums. Student involvement in these assemblies has been praised by teachers as being influential in maintaining and increasing participation in school music programs.

The program is dedicated to inspiring and empowering teens to become involved with music, continue their education, and live a drug-free life. In an effort to deliver and reinforce its messages in a positive, accessible format, Music Makes Music members speak with and motivate students between songs, sign autographs, and visit classrooms.

Founded in 2009 by Crowder and Ferrari, the organization has worked with over 200,000 youth nationally through its 2009 – 2014 “Music is Sick!” multi-city tour. Since its inception, over 250 schools in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Nevada, and California have benefited from the program. This will be Music Makes Music’s third visit to the Las Vegas area. The program is currently seeking funding, donations, and help from others to keep the program going strong.

“Music is what made me who I am today,” says Crowder. “This is our opportunity to talk to the students about the importance of music and how it can make a difference in their lives and at the same time give back to music departments in public schools across the nation.”

Media are invited to film or photograph. Music Makes Music staff and musicians will be available for interviews. Additional images of the band or band performances are available upon request.
