Friends of Nevada Wilderness, the only statewide environmental organization dedicated to Nevada’s wild lands, will be celebrating National Trails Day and the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act in Mt. Charleston Wilderness this Saturday, June 7th.
American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day® is a celebration of America’s magnificent Trail System, occurring annually on the first Saturday in June. Friends of Nevada Wilderness is partnering with the U.S. Forest Service, the Sierra Club, and the Backcountry Horsemen to participate in this national holiday to share their love of trails in Mt. Charleston wilderness with friends, family, and the Las Vegas community. National Trails Day introduces thousands of Americans to a wide array of trail activities in wilderness: hiking, horseback riding, trail running, bird watching and more. This event will also introduce the public to the nuances of trail work in wilderness areas which involves utilizing hand tools instead of mechanical tools and packing tools in by horse instead of relying on vehicles.
National Trails Day in Mt. Charleston will involve improving and maintaining the beautiful Bonanza and Bristlecone Trails of Mt. Charleston wilderness. Projects will include trail work and the installation of a commemorative 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act kiosk at the trailhead of the Bonanza Trail. Trail work will involve improving several drainage structures, as well as maintaining switchback retaining walls – work that will improve access for hikers and horseback riders. Lunch will be provided for all participants - anyone 12 years or older is welcome to join the fun! This project was made possible with funding by the National Wilderness Stewardship Alliance.
Saturday, June 7th from 8:30am-2:30pm.
