Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade

19th annual Fourth of July event features more than 70 entries

Conor Shine

A giant inflatable eagle is pulled along in the 2011 parade.

Numerous giant inflatables, dozens of floats and even some of Nevada's top political leaders — you'll find them all in the 19th annual Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade.
Gov. Brian Sandoval and U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., will both take part in the parade, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. July 4, starting at the corner of Hillpointe Road and Hills Center Drive in The Trails village of Summerlin. The event is free and open to the public.
The parade travels south on Hills Center Drive toward the Village Center Circle roundabout before heading west on Trailwood Drive, ending at the Trails Village Shopping Center.
More than 70 entries are expected, including the "Colors of the Wind" Pocahontas-inspired float and a float saluting injured law enforcement officers.
Parade sponsors say 16,000 cubic feet of helium will be used for 25-plus giant inflatables. Those include a new Thomas the Tank Engine 30-foot inflatable helium balloon, a 35-foot Very Hungry Caterpillar balloon and a 65–foot inflatable brachiosaurus.
The Parade Grand Marshal is Col. Peter Ford, Commander of Adversary Tactics Group, Nellis AFB.
The event is sponsored by The Summerlin Council, the non-profit arm of the Summerlin Community Association dedicated to the social, educational and recreational enrichment of residents.
Title sponsors are Summerlin and the Howard Hughes Corporation, developer of Summerlin. QI Security Services is the premier sponsor. Other major sponsors include Children's Medical Center at Summerlin Hospital; Country Financial; Design Works Custom Painting, Inc; Las Vegas Review Journal; Par 3 Landscape and Maintenance and Station Casinos.
