City news briefs

* BASEBALL GRANT -- The City Council voted to put up $200,000 in taxpayer funds to reimburse the Oakland Athletics baseball team for holding their first six home games at Cashman Field. Other revenue going to the team includes $450,000 from the sale of tickets and $90,000 in parking fees, at $3 per car. Clark County has also been asked to pony up $200,000 for the As, who are playing in Las Vegas while their stadium is being renovated.

* DOWNTOWN GRANT -- The city also agreed to give $25,000 to the Downtown Las Vegas Partners to publish a newsletter and draw more businesses into the 60-member group. The Partners, an outgrowth of the old Downtown Progress Association, promote downtown businesses.

* SEWER DROPPED -- After weeks of high-profile wrangling over who will provide sewer service to Summerlin South, the City Council dropped the issue quietly Wednesday. The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of the subdivision, rebuffed city offers to provide cut-rate sewer service, the profits from which would have gone to a regional park. Instead, Clark County will take care of Summerlin South sewage.
