Commentary: Williams headlines swing concert

EASTER WEEKEND: the culmination of Holy Week, a time for reflection and observance of the significance of Easter and Passover. ... Many will be attending Easter sunrise services; others will be attending a church, synagogue or other places of worship. ... Some will be attending shows; the following is a possible checklist.

The most entertaining show in town this weekend could well be "A Tribute to Swing, Jitterbug and Lindy Hop Concert," 8 p.m. Saturday at the West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd. ... Joe Williams, Bob Anderson, the Treniers and Jimmy Wilkins' 17-piece big band will perform and the indefatigable Norma Miller will be your emcee.

There will be special appearances by Chazz Young, Pat Rico, Evelyn King and Pierre Brown. ... Admission is free but you must pick up your tickets in advance; call Denise Wilson, 229-4800.

Production shows

The top three production show tickets every weekend would be Siegfried & Roy (Mirage), "Mystere" (Treasure Island) and "EFX" starring Michael Crawford (MGM Grand), not necessarily in that order. ... Siegfried & Roy are dark through April 11, which means tickets to the other two might be even scarcer. ... Both are worth a call this afternoon.

"Jubilee" (Bally's, dark on Friday) is the late Donn Arden's most spectacular effort. ... "The Great Radio City Spectacular" (Flamingo Hilton) features the famed Rockettes and stars Susan Anton. ... "Enter the Night" (Stardust) is a Broadway-style dance-and-song extravaganza. ... Each is unique; it depends upon your taste buds.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Starlight Express" (Hilton) is the best production this children's story update has ever received. ... This could be a good weekend for you and the family to enjoy it.

Continuing on

Country productions: Award-winning "Country Tonite" (Aladdin) is authentic fun and "Country Fever" (Golden Nugget), more contemporary. ... Lance Burton (Hacienda) is an internationally acclaimed prestidigitator and illusionist, while "Spellbound" (Harrah's) is magic plus variety acts. ... The best bargain is Nick Lewin's Comedy Magic (Maxim) at 1 and 3 p.m.

Debbie Reynolds gives you multiple choices, all good, in "That's Entertainment! Live" at 1:45 and 3:45 p.m., Debbie's show at 7:30 p.m., and Kenny Kerr's "Boy-lesque" at 10:30 p.m. ... "Jazz 'n' Jokes" has resumed, 10:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays (Celebrity Cafe).

"Les Folies Bergere" (Tropicana) is the last of the great French-style spectaculars, it still has the best Can-Can. ... The Excalibur has two full-family offerings: "An Evening in Vienna" at 2 p.m. and "King Arthur's Tournament" plus dinner at 6 and 8:30 p.m.

In conclusion

"Legends in Concert" (Imperial Palace) has impressionists duplicating stars but using their own voices, well-produced. ... The "Copacabana Dinner Show" (Rio) has a south-of-the-border flavor and good food. ... The Riviera's "Splash II" is part aquacade and part everything else, all of it contemporary, an up-tempo journey, sometimes a little splashy.

More Riviera: There's Frank Marino in "La Cage," Pudgy in "Crazy Girls," the Riviera Comedy Club and the hilarious "Bottoms Up," twice an afternoon, dark Thursdays. ... Marshall Sylver stars in "Hypnomania," plus sales pitches (Sahara). ... We recommend "Showgirls of Magic," a fine revue with Kevin James and the Gauchos (San Remo).

Also recommended: "Viva Las Vegas," thrice an afternoon (Sands); and "Hurray America," evenings (Westward Ho); plus comedy clubs at various hotel, especially the Maxim with Jeff Wayne this week.

Star-policy rundown

It's Barbara Mandrell, opening Friday (Bally's); Johnny Mathis (Caesars); Buddy Hackett, our buddy (Sheraton D.I.); and Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons (Sands). ... Lounge choices: Loretta Holloway (Excalibur), "Forever Plaid" (Flamingo Hilton) and "Beehive" (Luxor). ... See you Friday.
