Ormsby House Audit Ordered Following Big Deduction From Tax Payments

The audit, ordered by the Carson City Convention & Visitors' Bureau, is scheduled for April 17 and will cover the club's receipts for 1995.

Ormsby House management said the November deduction offset an overpayment of the taxes in October. The bureau collects an 8 percent tax on each hotel room in Carson City.

General manager Bruce Dewing said the hotel had sold a large number of rooms that included food and drinks, and inadvertently calculated its room tax payments to include the food and beverage costs.

"My assumption would be they just want to be sure we're doing it right now," Dewing added. "They can come in here any time they want to."

Bureau executive director Candy Duncan said requests for documents to back up the deduction had gone unanswered. But she added the audit is meant to be instructive rather than punitive.

"I know they've been going through a lot of changes," she said. "We just want to show them how other properties handle it."
