Is Primm proper for official state line name?

The state Board on Geographic Names needs your help.

On May 14, the board is holding a public hearing to get citizens' input on a proposed name for a new border town and names for several new geographic sites.

The emerging town at the California-Nevada state line southwest of Las Vegas is seeking to call itself Primm -- after the family that built the hotel-casinos there.

And Bart Ekron, a geologist from Tigard, Ore., has come up with several names he wants to tag regions near Boulder City. There's a small valley southeast of the city he'd like to call Shangri-La Valley. Several canyons east of the city could become Boy Scout Canyon, North Fork Boy Scout Canyon and South Fork Boy Scout Canyon.

Then there's a small knoll southeast of Boulder City Ekron has suggested might be labeled Camp Knob. There's a conical-shaped hill he wants to be known as Pilot Cone and a small knoll southeast of the city would be simply The Knoll.

How about some washes? Ekron wants them called Quail Wash, North Fork Wash and South Fork Quail Wash.

If these suggestions really irk you, or if you think you can be more creative, then show up at the Southern Nevada Historical Society and Museum, 700 Twin Lakes Drive (in Lorenzi Park), at 9:30 a.m.

You also can send your comments to Joseph Tingley, executive secretary of the state Board on Geographic Names, Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, MS 178, University of Nevada, Reno, Reno, NV 89557-0088. The phone number is 784-6691.
