City programs

BOCCE BALL -- Leagues are being organized by the Department of Parks and Leisure Activities. Play begins May 14 and runs Tuesday and Wednesday evenings through Oct. 30. Games are played at 7 p.m. at Jaycee Park, Eastern Avenue at St. Louis Avenue. Registration for the adult-oriented leagues take place through May 10 at the city's Active Sports for Seniors office, located at the Dula Gymnasium, 441 E. Bonanza Road. The cost is $10 per player, and all leagues need six to 10 members. Call 229-2208.

YOUTH PROGRAM -- The city of Las Vegas Mirabelli Community Center, 6200 Elton Ave., will offer the Summer Express Youth Program, June 18-Aug. 8. The program will run Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. providing programs and services for children 6-10. Special registration for Summer Express takes place 6-7:30 p.m. May 2 at the center. The cost is $55 for the first child, $45 for the second child and $35 for the third child in the same family. The weekly field trips on Wednesdays will have an extra charge. Call 229-6359.

INTRODUCTORY SPANISH -- The eight-week course in introductory Spanish begins Wednesday at the Derfelt Senior Center, 3333 W. Washington Ave. Sessions take place at 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Students must be 55 and older. The cost is $2 per session plus a one-time $1 registration fee. Call 229-6601 for details.

SUMMER BASKETBALL -- A pair of leagues are being organized at the Doolittle Community Center, 1901 N. J St. The Adult Men's League begins play June 10 and continues weekly thereafter. Registration begins April 22. The Church League begins play June 7, with registration starting April 29. The cost for either league is $200 per team plus official's fees. Teams must furnish their own uniforms. Leagues are designed for anyone 16 or older. All games will be played from 6-9 p.m. Call 229-6374.

DOLL SHOW -- The city of Las Vegas Derfelt Senior Center, 3333 W. Washington Ave., inside Lorenzi Park, hosts its annual outdoor Doll Show on May 19. Park strollers can view handcrafted porcelain dolls and other huggables between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Displays include items individually made by students in the various craft classes at the city's senior centers, as well as from other doll clubs throughout the community. Admission is free. There will also be a bake sale sponsored by the Confection Artists of Nevada. John Dear, popular sketch artist at the Derfelt Center, will demonstrate his talents. Topping the afternoon off, the Desert Dragons, an award-winning tae kwon do youth team exhibit their talents at noon and again at 1:30 p.m. Call 229-6601.
