3-car crash kills 3 local women

Three women were killed and a fourth was in critical condition today after a three-car collision in eastern Las Vegas.

None of the Chevy Spectrum's four passengers was wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Metro Police said.

The driver, a Las Vegas woman whose name was unavailable, and back-seat passenger Magdalena Espinosa, 44, of North Las Vegas, died at the scene.

Another passenger, Maria Carrillo, 36, of North Las Vegas, died later at University Medical Center. A fourth passenger, who was not identified, suffered massive head injuries and was taken to UMC.

The compact car was headed east in the 800 block of St. Louis Avenue near Santiago Street when a Ford Escort driven by Rosie Alvarez, 28, of Las Vegas pulled into the intersection from Santiago and turned onto westbound St. Louis, police said.

Witnesses told police that Alvarez had stopped at a stop sign, but she failed to yield the right of way to the Spectrum and collided with it, Sgt. Tracy McDonald said.

The impact caused the Spectrum to rotate and then slide sideways into traffic, where its driver's side was hit by a Chevy pickup driven by Arlon Hall, 43, of Las Vegas, McDonald said.

Alvarez and Hall were not injured. No charges have been filed against the drivers, police said.
