D.I. gets back on course

After a two-year absence, the Sheraton Desert Inn Golf Club will rejoin the three-course rotation for the Las Vegas Invitational, according to LVI tournament manager Charlie Baron.

The D.I. will replace the Las Vegas Country Club as one of the satellite courses for the PGA Tour event, ending the Country Club's 13-year association with the tournament.

The Tournament Players Club at Summerlin will continue to serve as the home course for the LVI and the Las Vegas Hilton Country Club will return for the third year as the other satellite course.

"It has been a great association over the years and the tournament has enjoyed being played there," Baron said of the Las Vegas Country Club. "They have been great to work with for the 13 years we've hosted the event."

The Desert Inn, which recently announced it would play host to the LPGA Tour's new season-ending Tour Championship this November, had been associated with the Las Vegas Invitational since its inception in 1983. The course dropped out of the rotation in 1994 when it was closed for renovation.

"The Desert Inn, with their history of golf and now that they've made a commitment to get back involved with the ladies event and getting back in this event, it's great for the community," Baron said.

"With our tournament sponsor being the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, having a facility on the Strip helps in that respect, also."

Several local courses, including the new Badlands Golf Club at Peccole Ranch, had been negotiating with the Las Vegas Founders' Club to serve as one of the satellite venues for the 90-hole tournament, which will be played Oct. 2-6.
