Driver, 90, rams, kills bicyclist

SUN STAFF REPORTS

A 90-year-old motorist driving on the shoulder of East Flamingo Road struck and killed a 21-year-old bicyclist, police said.

Traffic investigators have not confirmed how fast the unidentified woman was driving her dark blue Oldsmobile when she hit the man about 10 p.m. Monday in the 3300 block of Flamingo Road, just west of Pecos Road, police said. The area's posted speed limit is 45 mph.

The victim's name has been withheld until his family can be notified.

"She was driving in the shoulder and didn't see the bicyclist," said Metro Police Sgt. Curt Albert. "We're not sure yet why she was in the shoulder."

The crumpled blue-green frame of the man's bicycle lay a few feet from his companion's matching bike. The woman, Albert said, escaped injury because she was riding on the sidewalk.

The man was hit in front of Nevada Bob's golf shop and slid about 45 feet east down the asphalt. He died at the accident site.

The driver of the Oldsmobile, which had a hole in the right side of its smashed windshield, stopped a few feet from where the body landed, drove a few more feet and stopped again before getting out of her car, a witness said.

Authorities have not said whether the woman will be charged in the accident.
