Mirage again is up to the Challenge

SUN STAFF REPORTS

The Mirage overcame a strong challenge from Nellis Air Force Base to repeat as A Division champion of the Corporate Challenge.

The month-long tournament, with sporting events ranging from billiards to softball to track and field, featured 16,000 participants from 105 Southern Nevada companies competing in four divisions based on the number of employees.

The Mirage won the large corporation division with 127 points, outlasting a field of 23 teams in the tournament that concluded Saturday.

Nellis, last year's A runner-up, again finished second with 102.5 points. Bechtel-Nevada, which was comprised of several companies, including last year's C Division champion Raytheon, placed third with 88.2 points.

The Department of Energy also repeated as D Division -- small companies -- champion with 147 points. EEA was second with 127 points and Kenrob was third with 77. There were 27 teams in that group.

In the closest final in the 11-year history of the Corporate Challenge, Greenspun Inc. pulled out a victory in the C Division, going to the fifth-level tie-breaker.

Greenspun, made up of employees of the Las Vegas SUN, Green Valley Athletic Club and sister companies, had 101 points, as did the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Hughes Tech finished third with 83.5 points in the 27-team division.

In the B Division, Southwest Gas, last year's runner-up, won the title with 127.5 points. Sprint Telephone was second with 93 points and Nevada Power followed with 86.3 points in the division that had the most teams, 28.
