Bear-human bond to benefit

The Homewood Mountain Resort on Tahoe's west shore will hold a bear festival Dec. 23 and 24, with part of the proceeds from lift ticket sales going to the Bear Preservation League.

The league also will benefit from the sale of Tahoe artist Jan Foss' limited edition prints called "Oliver's Plea: Stop the Killing."

Oliver, a young bear who became a symbol for the league, was killed last month when it apparently was hit by a car.

He was the orphan of a mother bear killed in August 1998 on the west shore by California agents for being a nuisance bear. The death spawned the league.

About 120 league volunteers responded to bear complaints in the Tahoe Basin this summer in an effort to educate residents how to co-exist with the animals.
