Suspect says he didn’t slay three

The California man charged in a deadly triple shooting at a downtown apartment complex told police that on the day of the slayings he had approached the victims about a missing half-pound of marijuana, but he said he did not shoot them.

Glenford Anthony Budd, 20, who also goes by the nickname "A.I.," was arraigned Monday in Justice Court on three counts of murder with use of a deadly weapon.

Authorities allege that Budd shot to death Da'jon Jones, 13; Jason Moore, 17; and Derrick Jones, 23, on May 27 in an apartment at the Saratoga Palms II East apartment complex at 2895 E. Charleston Blvd., near Fremont Street.

None of the victims was related and the shooting does not appear to be gang-related, police said.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Sun, police received several emergency calls from the complex reporting that multiple shots were fired in an upstairs apartment.

One of the callers, a brother of the youngest victim, said he was in the apartment with his brother and three other men when he heard shots coming from another room inside the apartment.

The caller told police that he fled when the shooting began and that he "believed A.I. had shot everyone in the apartment."

He said the incident could have begun earlier that evening when the men were playing basketball in the complex. He said Budd had accused Derrick Jones of stealing marijuana from him, but that Budd then left to get a drink.

He said he, Derrick Jones and Moore were in the living room watching television and Da'jon Jones was in the master bedroom when Budd returned shortly before midnight.

Budd went directly into the master bedroom and two shots were heard, the brother told police. He said when he heard an additional shot fired from the bedroom, he "ran out of the apartment and didn't look back."

Da'jon Jones was found dead in the bedroom and Jason Moore was found dead on the landing outside the apartment. Derrick Jones was found wounded in the hallway of the apartment. He died about five hours later at University Medical Center.

When police arrested Budd two days later at a North Las Vegas residence, he told detectives he was in the apartment "but didn't shoot anyone."

He said he had gone to the apartment "to find out who had stolen a half a pound of marijuana from him," when he heard a gunshot fired from inside the apartment.

Budd said he ran out of the apartment. Budd said that when he looked back, he saw Moore sitting on a bucket on the landing in front of the door.

Budd stopped talking to detectives at that point and declined to give police a statement, saying he wanted to speak to an attorney.

A half-pound of marijuana can fetch $700 to $1,800 depending on the potency of the drug, police said.

According to the arrest document, when police apprehended Budd, he had cut his hair. Gone were the shoulder-length braids he had on the night of the slayings.

Police had tracked Budd down with the help of Da'jon Jones' mother, who said Budd had once dated her daughter, who now lives in California.

Budd, visiting Las Vegas from Los Angeles, was staying with his aunt and uncle, who also live in an apartment at the complex.

Budd's preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 16 before Justice of the Peace Tony Abbatangelo.
