Montandon leaves hospital after brain tumor is removed

North Las Vegas Mayor Michael Montandon left a Phoenix hospital in good spirits Monday, three days after undergoing surgery to remove a noncancerous brain tumor, city spokeswoman Brenda Johnson said.

It's not clear when Montandon will return to work, she said.

Until Montandon returns, Councilman William Robinson, mayor pro tem of the council, will serve as chairman of council meetings.

Montandon, 39, had surgery Friday at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix to remove the golf-ball sized tumor. The mayor grew up in Phoenix and still has many relatives there.

"He's leaving the hospital and going to his parents' home to recover," Johnson said Monday. "He came through the surgery well."

Previously, Montandon has said he went to his doctor after headaches that he has had for years began to get worse. They had also come more frequently since the beginning of the year, he said.

Montandon was elected mayor of North Las Vegas in 1997 and re-elected in 2001.

Montandon and his wife, Antoinette, have five children.
