Injured driver Dare released from hospital

Airton Dare was moved from the hospital to a nearby rehabilitation center as he recovers from injuries after crashing during practice in Texas last week.

Dare was transferred to the rehab center Wednesday. His recovery is expected to take up to three months.

The Brazilian Indy Racing League driver broke his right arm and right leg in practice June 5 for to the Bombardier 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. He had surgery in Dallas, then another operation in Indianapolis to repair minor fractures in his hand.

Fuhr elected to Hall

Goaltender Grant Fuhr was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

He became the third player from the Edmonton Oilers' dominating teams of the 1980s to make the Hall. He won five Stanley Cup championships with Edmonton while the Oilers were playing a wide-open style.

Fuhr, the first black member of the hockey hall, was joined by forward Pat LaFontaine, Detroit Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch and junior team coach Brian Kilrea.

Navratilova seeks singles wild card

Martina Navratilova wants another chance to play singles.

Navratilova, 46, has asked for a wild card to play at next week's Wimbledon warmup tournament in Eastbourne.

Navratilova said the singles competition will help prepare her for doubles at Wimbledon, where she hopes to equal Billie Jean King's record of 20 titles at the All England Club.

UCLA coach Adams set to step down in 2004

UCLA baseball coach Gary Adams plans to retire after the 2004 season, his 30th with the Bruins.

During his 29 seasons, beginning in 1975, Adams, 63, has compiled a 950-793-7 record, taking the Bruins to the NCAA Division I playoffs seven times, reaching the College World Series in 1997 and the NCAA Division I Super Regional in 2000.

Thirty-eight of his players have made it to the major leagues, including Eric Karros, Troy Glaus, Dave Roberts and Todd Zeile.
