Washington fires Neuheisel

Washington athletic director Barbara Hedges announced she was firing Rick Neuheisel as Washington's football coach for betting on the past two NCAA basketball tournaments and lying to school officials and NCAA investigators about it.

Neuheisel, 42, was suspended with pay and given until June 26 to respond to his notice of termination. He was 33-16 at Washington.

The NCAA prohibits gambling on college sports by athletes or athletic department staff.

Brodeur wins Vezina

Martin Brodeur went 1-for-2 in trophies for the second time this week.

But for the first time, he was chosen as the NHL's top goalie.

Brodeur was presented with the Vezina Trophy on Thursday night, three days after he led New Jersey to its third Stanley Cup championship.

He didn't win the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the playoffs despite posting an NHL-record seven shutouts -- including three in the seven-game finals against Anaheim.

Peter Forsberg of Colorado edged Brodeur and Vancouver's Markus Naslund for the Hart Trophy as MVP. He won the scoring title with 106 points and became the first Swedish player to win the Hart.

Kobe goes under knife

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant underwent shoulder surgery in New York, and was expected to make a full recovery.

Bryant had an inflamed bursa removed and a frayed labrum trimmed in his right shoulder during surgery that took under an hour.

He was released from Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in the afternoon. Dr. Louis Bigliani said he expects Bryant to make a complete recovery.

Agassi wins match at Queen's Club

Second-seeded Andre Agassi needed only 47 minutes to defeat 1996 Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek 6-1, 6-2 to move into the quarterfinals at the Queen's Club.

Top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt of Australia lost to Sebastien Grosjean 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Queen's Club today, ending his bid for a record fourth consecutive title in this event.

Hewitt had won 18 consecutive matches at Queen's Club followinghis loss to Pete Sampras in the semifinals in 1999.
