Columnist Muriel Stevens: Mall is growing to extra large

Shopping options at Fashion Show mall continue to increase. At least nine new stores have opened, and a number of stores have relocated. The excitement will continue throughout the summer. Eight additional stores will debut in August.

During last week's fact-finding excursion to the Fashion Show, I had a grand time wandering in and out of the newest stores. There were sales in so many stores that shoppers were buying holiday gifts -- way to go, savvy shoppers.

My shopping buddy headed for the just-opened White House/Black Market shop, where all of the merchandise is black or white or a combination (loved the polka-dot summer bags) thereof. The markdowns on T-shirts were terrific. The one I bought had a 50 percent sale price, $40 to $20. An additional 30 percent was deducted at the register. This wonderful tee cost me $14.

The grand-opening celebration continues through June 26. The young, perky sales staff charmed us with their friendliness and nifty service.

New stores include Futuretronics, devoted to electronics; Bag N' Baggage, for luggage and leather goods; Z Gallerie, a wonderful collection of art, furniture and home accessories; Carolee, costume jewelry, women's accessories and handbags; Honolulu Surf Co., featuring women's and men's garb and sporting goods; and Aqua Beachwear for swimwear, and Lunettes, trendy eyewear.

Other stores that recently opened include Sunset Canyon for custom and ready-to-wear western attire and Michael E. Minden Co. Jewelers. Brighton Collectibles, women's accessories, luggage, leather goods and shoes; Art Vignettes, an art gallery; Flowers2U.com; Cinnabon; Limited Too, children's apparel, and Millenio, home furnishings.

It was interesting seeing familiar stores in unfamiliar locations. All of the relocated shops are larger than the original and have greater visibility. Lillie Rubin, Newport Clock Gallery, Cache, Jessica McClintock and Soho Collection. Traffic in and out of these venues was good.

Scott Freshwater, vice president and general manager for Fashion Show, said, "There is still much to be done to complete the Fashion Show's expansion."

In addition to the new stores opening, Fashion Show is continuing construction on the 480-foot-long "Cloud" on Las Vegas Boulevard and the new 11,288-square-foot food court.

The jury's still out on the humongous cloud that dominates and dwarfs the stores around it. Maybe when this interactive display feature is operational it will be as appealing as the Fremont Street Experience.

With so much space, I hope the food court has managed to sign up some new, healthier food outlets, not just the usual suspects. No word yet on what's going into the space.

June is National Tea Month: Celebrate the allure of tea, hot or cold, with a sip of red tea, South African-style. This trendy new choice is from Kalahari brand red teas. There are a number of varieties. Red tea is naturally sweet and caffeine-free and is reported to have more antioxidants than black or green tea. Look for red tea in health food stores.com
