Casino delayed by high-rise building moratorium

BILOXI, Miss. -- The city of Biloxi has placed a temporary moratorium on high rise developments along a stretch of beachfront until work is completed on a proposed air safety ordinance.

The moratorium, ordered on a 4-2 vote Tuesday by the city council, brings several projects near Keesler Air Force Base to a temporary halt, including The Portofino Towers, the Sea Breeze Condominiums and the relocation of Treasure Bay Casino.

The moratorium expires July 16. It could be extended if the city hasn't completed work on the ordinance, said Mayor A.J. Holloway.

David Nichols, a former chief administrative officer for Biloxi who is now a paid consultant for Treasure Bay Casino, said the mast on Treasure Bay's pirate ship casino is 216 feet tall, a violation of the proposed ordinance.
