Man killed in van-truck collision

A 22-year-old Las Vegas man was killed and two others injured in a two-car accident involving a medical transport van at St. Louis Avenue and Maryland Parkway about 3 p.m. on Monday.

Metro Police were still investigating the crash, officers said.

Clay Magneson died on the scene, according to the Clark County coroner's office. He was driving a white 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck eastbound on St. Louis, according to witnesses.

Russell Merryman, 42, was driving a 1998 Ford MedRide van going south on Maryland and was in the intersection on a green light, witnesses told police. There were no patients in the van.

The pickup truck failed to stop at the red light and hit the van, police said. The pickup slid sideways and rolled on its side, coming to rest upright. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, officers said.

A passenger in the pickup, Acisa Sirin, 23, and Merryman were taken to University Medical Center with serious and moderate injuries, respectively.

Doctor facing loss of license

The state Board of Medical Examiners has started proceedings that could result in the revocation of the medical license of a Pahrump physician who was convicted in May of molesting a 12-year-old girl in 2001.

The board's investigating committee, headed by Dr. Paul Stewart of Las Vegas, has filed a complaint against Dr. Everett C. Freer Jr., noting that he was found guilty of a crime of moral turpitude.

On Thursday and Friday in Reno, the state Board of Medical Examiners will consider what punishment it should hand down to Freer.

In May, Freer was placed on five years' probation, fined $10,000 and ordered not contact the family member or a witness who testified against him unless it is approved by the state Parole and Probation Division.

Freer is prohibited from having sexually explicit material and cannot enter businesses that offer sexually related forms of entertainment.

He was originally charged with sexually assaulting the girl. The charge was later changed to attempted lewdness with a child under 14 and incest.
