Man sought in home invasion

Metro Police robbery detectives are searching for a man who invaded an apartment and tied up the occupants last month in the 3000 block of South Nellis Boulevard near Vegas Valley Drive.

The suspect stole an automated teller machine card and used it at a bank on East Charleston Boulevard, acting Sgt. Gordon Martines of Metro's robbery section said.

The robber is described as a black man in his 20s with short hair, a thin mustache and a tattoo in script on his upper left arm. He is between 5-feet-9 and 5-feet-11 and 140 to 160 pounds.

NLV cuts city staff positions

The North Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday cut 10 1/2 positions from the city budget and put off hiring 19 police department employees until July.

Acting City Manager Gregory Rose said all of the eliminated positions were vacant. He said most of the positions were part of the current budget but had not been filled yet.

"We're not doing any layoffs," Rose said.

The additional officers and support staff for the police department will be needed to staff a new police precinct station that will open in the northwest part of the city.

Delaying those hires will better coincide their starts with the opening of the new station, Rose said.

Police ticket jaywalkers

Metro Police gave out 367 tickets over the course of two days in an operation aimed at reducing the number of traffic accidents involving pedestrians, according to a news release issued this morning.

The operation -- conducted Sept. 8 and Sept. 12 -- was directed at motorists who fail to yield to walkers, and also targeted jaywalkers. Motorists were given 223 tickets for failures to yield to pedestrians, 60 pedestrians were cited for jaywalking, and another 84 tickets were handed out for various other traffic offenses.

As of Sept. 3, 22 pedestrians have died in Metro's jurisdiction this year, police said.
