Soaring Club will host electric event

The Las Vegas Soaring Club will host its second annual All Electric Fun Fly event at 9 a.m. Sunday at the club flying field located on West Charleston Boulevard, two miles west of the Las Vegas Beltway.

Spectators are welcome and all AMA licensed pilots are invited to fly their electric aircraft.

Raffle prizes will be given.

Ethics and Politics program planned

The League of Women Voters will present Ethics and Politics, a program at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Main Street Station.

Guest speakers include: Richard Morgan, dean of the Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; professor Lee Berick, UNLV School of Public Administration; Randy Capurro of Brown and Brown Insurance; professor Craig Watton, UNLV Ethics and Policy Study; Majahid Ramadan, MR Consulting; and David Griego, Nevada Energy Buyer's Network.

Run, walk planned for McDonald House

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Las Vegas presents Runnin' for the House, a 5K and 1-mile run/walk beginning with registration at 6:45 a.m. Saturday at Hughes Center, 3800 Howard Hughes Parkway.

The event will also feature a run for children 10 and under, a pancake breakfast, computerized chip timing, awards, prizes and entertainment.

Admission for the 5K is $30 the day of the race; $20 for adults, and $15 for children under 12 and seniors over 60 if pre-registered. The 1-mile event is $17 for adults, and $12 for children and seniors.

Hours extended for blood donation

To accommodate more blood donors, United Blood Services has extended hours Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at the West Charleston Boulevard center and Greeen Valley center through the rest of September.

Donors can call 233-9620 to schedule appointments at all five Las Vegas area blood centers.

Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old, 110 pounds, and feeling well and healthy. On average, the typical time to donate is under 90 minutes. All donors must present proper identification. Donors with questions regarding eligibility, location of blood centers or blood drives, or hours of operation, can call 233-9620 for assistance.

Saturday is free at Lake Mead

In honor of Public Lands Day, the National Park Service plans a Fee-Free Day Saturday at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

The fee-free day only applies to the regular entry for one day. Lake Mead NRA entrance fees are usually $5 for a one-five-day pass or $20 for an annual pass that expires Dec. 31. Vessels will still be subject to the boat fees of $10 for a five-day pass or $20 for the annual pass.

Service academies forum scheduled

Members of the Nevada congressional delegation will host the Southern Nevada service academy information day forum from 7 p.m. to 8:10 p.m. Saturday at Community College of Southern Nevada, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave.

The forum is designed to provide information to students regarding the education and career opportunities available at the Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, West Point and the Merchant Marine Academy.
