Cooler weather really is coming

Weather forecasters say a hint of cooler air should arrive in Southern Nevada soon, although the heat in the Las Vegas Valley stayed through the weekend.

The temperature hit 100 degrees both Saturday and Sunday, National Weather Service meteorologist Barry Pierce said, and was expected to reach as high as 102 today. The record for today's date is 102, set in 1978.Tonopah, in the middle of the state, hit a high Sunday of 90 degrees, breaking the record of 88 degrees set in 1963, Pierce said.

A gradual cooling trend should begin midweek, weather service forecaster Larry Jensen said.

The heat clamped down over Southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona over the weekend as high pressure, marked by hot temperatures and little if any wind, settled over the region.

Daytime highs in Las Vegas should edge toward normal -- the mid-80s -- by the weekend.

Argument leads to fatal shooting

An argument at a bar resulted in the shooting death of a 24-year-old man early Saturday, Metro Police said.

Officers called to KJ's bar in the 1600 block of Lamb Boulevard about 3 a.m. Saturday found James E. McKines dead, Metro Sgt. Rocky Alby said. A second shooting victim was taken to University Medical Center Trauma Unit with a gunshot wound in the leg, Alby said. A third man was treated at UMC and released.

Metro detectives said that witnesses told them an argument started inside the bar and moved outside. Two men started shooting, they said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or the Metro Homicide Section at 229-3521.

Shooting believed over drug deal

Metro Police believe the shooting of a man in an apartment complex courtyard Saturday was over a drug deal, Metro Police said.

The man, whose name has not been released, was in grave condition Sunday at University Medical Center, police said. He is in his 20s.

Officers called to an apartment complex in the 300 block of West Baltimore Avenue about 6 p.m. on Saturday found a man shot in the head, Metro homicide Lt. Tom Monahan said.

The victim had a confrontation with another man and a woman, police said, and the man pulled out a gun and shot the victim.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or the Metro Homicide Section at 229-3521.

Driver, 17, killed in one-car crash

A 17-year-old boy was killed shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday when he lost control of the car he was driving and hit a concrete median and two light poles, Metro Police said.

Gabriel Wences of Las Vegas was heading east on Stewart Avenue from Pecos Road at a high rate of speed when his 1993 Nissan Sentra drifted to the left and collided with the concrete median, police said.

The Nissan went onto the median and struck an overhead street light pole, police said. The car knocked the pole off its mount and continued east on the median, then started to spin. The car hit a second light pole broadside and came to rest.

Wences was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. There is evidence that alcohol might have been involved in the crash. This is the 87th fatal crash in Metro's jurisdiction.

Doctor arrested on drug charge

A well-known Las Vegas ophthalmologist was arrested Sept. 18 on a warrant for cocaine possession stemming from an Aug. 24 traffic stop, Metro Police said.

Kurt Buzard, 50, who owns Buzard Eye Institute on West Sahara Avenue, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center and released on his own recognizance, records show.

Police said more than two grams of cocaine were found in Buzard's possession.

Thunderbirds cancel El Paso show

The Air Force Thunderbirds have canceled a demonstration scheduled for this weekend in El Paso, Texas, and the participation of the team in November's show at Nellis Air Force Base remains in doubt.

This weekend's show was the latest to be canceled because of the crash of one of the Thunderbirds at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho on Sept. 14.

The pilot of the F-16 that crashed ejected safely, but the cause of that crash remains under investigation, Lt. Col. Richard McSpadden Jr., Thunderbird commander, said.

A decision has not been made on the rest of the team's schedule, including Nellis' Aviation Nation show on Nov. 15-16.
