Between center Michaela Thomas and forward Marquichea Burns, Basic's girls basketball team believes it has a solid foundation heading into this season.

Thomas is a power in the paint while Burns is dangerous as an outside shooter.

The formula was at its best at the end of last season, when the girls led Basic to a 5-1 run that included a playoff win against Rancho.

"Honestly, we got tired of running in practice after the losses, so we all came together at the end of the season," Thomas said. "Marquichea and I came together just as everyone else on the team started playing better."

Thomas and Burns, who are both 5-foot-10, each averaged eight rebounds per game as sophomores last year.

As Basic's only returning starters, Thomas and Burns will need to continue their domination for the Wolves to make another playoff appearance.

"All the talent is there this year, we just need to put it together," Burns said. "Age is the biggest difference from last year. But they haven't been slow in learning."

With two freshmen and no seniors in its starting lineup, the biggest question for Basic will be its leadership.

Basic coach Teresa Gallegos isn't worried as Thomas and Burns both have two years of experience.

"I think (the freshmen) have an advantage in having those two older players to guide and lead them," Gallegos said. "I really think we can improve on last year."

Gallegos said Thomas' affinity for being physical under the glass has made her a rare gem in the Southeast Division. She led Basic with 10 points per game last year.

"There are other teams with girls who have the size that she has," Gallegos said. "But I don't know of any others who have the same power and domination under the hoop."

Burns averaged nine points a game last year and has improved her outside shot in the offseason. Gallegos said Burns didn't miss a single practice, which helped her to become a team captain.

"She's very vocal and is always trying to instill what the coaches are trying to instill," Gallegos said.

With Green Valley returning nearly all of its starters and defending region champions Silverado expected to be improved, Basic will have its hands full in league play.
