Targeted towards business travelers, every room in Element Hotel is equipped with a kitchen. The $19 million project has 125 rooms.

A new hotel, the $19 million, 123-room Element Las Vegas Summerlin, is opening Dec. 18 near the intersection of the 215 Beltway and Town Center Drive.

The hotel is part of a growing nationwide chain of Element Hotels, said the project's developer, Jeffrey LaPour. The first one in the chain opened in July in Lexington, Mass.

"We will be the second one to open in the country," LaPour said. "There are roughly 100 in the pipeline nationwide."

As an extended-stay hotel, Element Las Vegas Summerlin will allow guests to stay 30 nights or longer. Each room in the four-story structure will feature a full kitchen and refrigerator.

The hotel will also include a resort-style swimming pool and extensive usage of natural lighting and large windows in an effort to reduce energy costs. The typical rate for a one-week stay will be $1,330, or $190 per night, which would include a king-sized bed and a queen-sized sofa bed.

Construction of the hotel began in October 2007. In the search for an ideal location, LaPour said the site at 10555 Discovery Drive was selected because Summerlin is an underserved area for extended-stay hotels.

"There is a growing base of business from south Summerlin, up the 215 all the way to where it connects with U.S. 95," he said. "There wasn't a niche being filled. There is a tremendous amount of medical and corporate demand in that area."

A sizable portion of the hotel's guests, LaPour said, will probably be linked to the adjacent Nevada Cancer Institute, which brings in many patients from out of state for treatment.

"I think it will be a great amenity for them to have outside their front door," he said. "For both faculty, researchers and patients."

Despite the nationwide economic downturn, LaPour said that Element Las Vegas Summerlin was able to come to fruition without any major delays. The new hotel will add 40 full-time jobs when it opens.

"Historically, Las Vegas has been a city that was always able to sidestep the downward trends," said LaPour, who moved to Las Vegas from Nebraska in 1990. "This time around, I think we're pulled into the mix just as much as everyone else. But we do have a fairly good amount of job growth, which a lot of areas can't say about themselves."
