Nevada State College cuts programs to meet fiscal needs

A host of Nevada State College applied science programs were eliminated at the December Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents meeting — little more than a year after many of the programs had officially begun.

The state's fiscal crisis had caused the school to cut the programs before the beginning of the 2008-09 school year, including the bachelor's of applied science in engineering, information technology, media technology, automotive technology, horticulture management and construction management.

"We do not have the resources to hire faculty for all the programs," Nevada State College President Fred Maryanski said. "And we certainly do not expect to have the resources over the next biennium."

Only a few students were enrolled in the programs, he said, and those students were transferred to tracks for applied science degrees in management.

"They're all comfortable with that," Maryanski said.
