Some students can think of nothing more than the upcoming winter break as it draws near, but for several dedicated band students, the holidays provide the perfect opportunity to make some much-needed money.

Coronado High School's band students are among those who are taking their need to pay for reeds, uniforms and travel to the public. Until Dec. 24, students will be at Town Square, wrapping gifts for a donation.

People tease about the affluent community at Coronado, but in reality there are plenty of students at the school who need extra help, band director Danielle McCracken said. To provide that, the students have some type of fundraiser they can get involved with on a monthly basis. Doing so is entirely voluntary.

"It's just another opportunity for kids to make money," she said.

There's more to the event than just extra funds, though.

"The kids have such a blast," Janet McDannald, band booster treasurer, said.

After marching season ends in November, the students go off in separate directions and don't get to interact as much, so this brings them back together, she said.

They're allowed to bring friends and family to keep them company, as long as everyone keeps working, McCracken said.

They've come up with creative marketing tactics, as well, including homemade costumes some of the volunteers get dressed in. They walk Town Square looking like giant wrapped presents to spread the word about what they're doing.

There is no set price for shoppers looking to have a present wrapped, but the students have requested the following minimums: $3 for a small package, $4 for a medium package, $5 for a large package and $6 for an extra large package. For odd or oversized packages, they request at least $10, and boxes are available for a requested $1 each.
