Man dies in climbing accident

A 35-year-old Las Vegas man died Sunday after plunging 75 feet while attempting a climb on Lake Mead National Recreation Area's Fortification Hill.

Lake Mead spokesman Andrew Muñoz said Jay Brown Jr. was hiking with a group on a popular trail when he decided to try an off-trail climb around 10:50 a.m. Witnesses told authorities he had reached a height of about 16 feet when he lost his hold.

"It's an unfortunate accident," Muñoz said.

A Kingman paramedic was helicoptered to the area, near Kingman Wash on the Arizona side of Lake Mead. Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.
