Nevada Day prompts Friday closures

October 31 is not just Halloween. It is also Nevada Day.

On Oct. 31, 1864, Nevada became the 36th state admitted to the union, and Nevadans have been celebrating the day officially since 1939.

In 1999, voters and the state Legislature decided that as of 2000 the recognized holiday should be moved to the last Friday of October. Since then, Nevada Day has not always been observed on the date of its official statehood, but this year Oct. 31 falls on a Friday.

Because it's a state holiday all state offices and institutions are closed. Utility providers, post offices and services such as garbage pickup will be open as usual.

Closures include:

  • Public and private schools, as well as Nevada State College, College of Southern Nevada and UNLV.
  • Some local banks, such as Nevada State Bank. Larger banks such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Washington Mutual will be open during usual Friday business hours.
  • All state offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Municipal offices, including city and county agencies. However, the parks and recreation facilities in Henderson and Las Vegas will be open, with many of them hosting Halloween festivities.
  • Municipal and state courts. However, federal courts will remain open.

Henderson offices that are usually closed on Fridays, such as the Finance Department, will not take an extra day off and agencies that are normally open on Fridays, such as the Business License and City Clerk's office, will be closed.

Boulder City offices will be closed on Fridays, as usual, but will remain open Thursday.

All federal offices and institutions will be open during normal hours. Federal offices were closed Columbus Day while state and city offices remained open.
