Battle over Las Vegas City Hall lands in District Court

Culinary Union leaders today filed an expected lawsuit in District Court seeking to force the city of Las Vegas to put two redevelopment initiatives on the June 2 ballot.

The Nevada Supreme Court earlier this week refused to take action against the city, saying issues in the case must be addressed first in District Court.

The city has fought putting the initiatives on the ballot, claiming they would harm redevelopment efforts, including a new city hall project.

In their court papers, union leaders said the complaint was being brought to "vindicate the rights of thousands of Las Vegas voters who endorsed" the petitions.

The complaint charged that the City Council has tried to "thwart the will of the city's electors."

The case has been assigned to District Judge Tim Williams, who is considering a hearing on the matter Tuesday.
