A history of unemployment in Nevada

Although initial unemployment insurance claims have dropped from a high of nearly 9,000 per week in January, they’re still about 50 percent higher than in the same week last year. Continuing claims declined as well, but are more than twice what they were in 2008. The Nevada Employment, Training and Rehabilitation Department says it usually sees first claims spike at the beginning of the year.

A few more months of data need to be collected to determine whether unemployment in the state is easing or just entering a seasonal transition. (View a larger version of the graphic below).
