Residents at the Nevada State Veterans Home partied in style on Sunday as they watched the Pittsburgh Steelers win Super Bowl XLIII.

"I love parties and the game was real interesting," resident Sallie White said. "I watch football off and on. When I know the people it's more interesting. This time I cheered for all of them."

Approximately 60 residents, 15 volunteers, staff and family members turned out for the event, which was held in the home's recently completed dining hall. The game was projected onto a screen and shown on two televisions inside the hall as well.

"It was a good chance to enjoy the biggest game of the season," said Angela Metcalf, the facility's volunteer coordinator.

This was the sixth annual party at the home. This year's event was sponsored by the Jewish War Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Ex-Prisoners of War and Nevada Beverage Company.

"Every year it gets better and better," Metcalf said. "The residents look forward to it every year, especially when their families come out. Then they can enjoy the game in a festive atmosphere and spend time with their loved ones."

Metcalf said it's the second largest party of the year at the home, second only to its Father's Day party in June.

Resident Dwayne Hansen said he enjoyed the food and the party and more importantly rooting for the Steelers.

"The way it came out was the best," he said.

Shirley Tapely on the other hand admitted she's not much of a football fan, but still had a good time.

"It was lovely. I don't watch much football, but I enjoyed the competition and I liked the party," she said.
