Police wait to release names in officer-involved shooting

Fatal shooting

Metro Police on Sunday still were waiting for the victim's family members to be notified before releasing the name of a man fatally wounded by officers early Saturday morning in downtown Las Vegas.

Police also weren't releasing the names of the officers involved in the shooting, but said the names would be made public at a later time.

Uniformed patrol officers in a marked vehicle made contact with a man jaywalking across Fremont Street east of Maryland Parkway at about 4:42 a.m. Saturday. Police said the man displayed a large pistol and wouldn't follow orders to drop the weapon.

The man then stood on a sidewalk in front of businsesses in the 1100 block of Fremont Street while brandishing the weapon, police said.

An officer trained in crisis intervention spoke with the man, trying to get him to surrender, but police said the man pointed the gun at officers minutes later. Officers then fired at the man, who was taken to University Medical Center, where he later died.

Police weren't releasing other details on Sunday.
