Boys’ Sunrise Regional quarterfinals delayed

Desert Pines forfeits three games, loses top seed

Expanded coverage

Desert Pines used an ineligible player and now every boys basketball team in the Sunrise Region is feeling the effects.

The Jaguars forfeited three games Tuesday afternoon, dropping them from first to third place in the Northeast League and forcing the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association to move all of the 4A Sunrise Regional quarterfinals to Wednesday.

Desert Pines High School's own investigation confirmed that the Jaguars used an ineligible player against Canyon Springs on Dec. 15, Chaparral on Jan. 6 and Las Vegas on Jan. 8.

Eldorado is now the Northeast champion, although it forfeited a game against Valley on Feb. 6 for playing an ineligible athlete.

The original final standings in the Northeast League were:

Desert Pines 11-1

Eldorado 10-2

Canyon Springs 7-4

Las Vegas 7-5

The new standings are:

Eldorado 9-3

Canyon Springs 8-3

Desert Pines 8-4

Las Vegas 8-4

The new quarterfinal match-ups on Wednesday are:

No. 4 SE Coronado (8-6) at No. 1 NE Eldorado (9-3) - 6:30 p.m.

No. 3 NE Desert Pines (8-4) at No. 2 SE Silverado (12-2) - 7:15 p.m.

No. 3 SE Liberty (10-4) at No. 2 NE Canyon Springs (8-3) - 6:30 p.m.
