Boulder City High girls basketball coach Brian Lemmel earned his first 3A Southern League victory on Jan. 9 when the Eagles beat Moapa Valley 55-41.

Boulder City did not win any league games last year in Lemmel's first year with the program.

He'll go for another win at Virgin Valley on Friday.

"The girls rose to the occasion against Moapa Valley, now we face a top team in Virgin Valley that also won it's league opener," Lemmel said.

Boulder City (6-6, 1-0) controlled the game from the onset, but it was a strong performance in the middle quarters that helped the Eagles pull away. The Eagles outscored Moapa Valley 37-22 during the second and third quarters to lead 45-28 going into the final quarter. Caiti Forrester had a game-high 22 points, including four 3-pointers to lead Boulder City.

Lemmel said that while Forrester led the team in scoring, it was the inside play of junior forward Rachel Moody and freshman forward Karlee Koopman that was key to the win.

"We had a strong inside presence with those two," Lemmel said. "We didn't need our outside shots to go down, because they did a good job inside and they dominated the boards.

Moody had 10 rebounds and 13 points, while Koopman added nine points and nine rebounds.

"We passed the ball really well and found the open spots on the floor. We really came together," Moody said.

Boulder City falls to Moapa Valley

Three of the last four games for the Boulder City High's boys basketball team have come down to the final seconds and all three have gone against the Eagles, including a 58-57 loss to Moapa Valley on Jan. 9.

But coach Bobby Reese believes it is only a matter of time before his team catches those breaks.

"That was a really good game and fun to watch. A lot of things went there way at the end, but we have to do a better job of finishing," Reese said.

The Eagles held a five-point lead with five minutes remaining and led 57-55 with less than 30 seconds to play against Moapa Valley. However, Moapa Valley senior Max Jenkins earned a trip to the free throw line when he was fouled on a 3-point attempt.

He knocked down all three shots with 10 seconds remaining to give Moapa Valley a road win.

Boulder City senior guard Joey Western scored 22 points to lead Boulder City (8-8, 0-1), while senior forward Jeremy Smith and senior guard Joey Felsenfeld added 10 points each.

Smith said he enjoyed playing in front of the largest crowd he's seen during his high school career.

"The crowd was tight. It definitely gave us more energy," Smith said.

The focus now turns to Virgin Valley on Friday. Reese said they're spending the week in between games working on the defense.

"Defense is still our strength and we do a good job at it, but there are little things to get better at," he said. "I like having four days of practice where you don't have to cram everything into two days like you usually do. We'll be totally prepared for Friday."

Bowlers split against Las Vegas, Desert Pines

Boulder City High's bowling teams made their return to the lanes on Jan. 5 by hosting consecutive matches at Boulder Bowl.

Boulder City hosted Desert Pines on Jan. 5 and both the Eagles boys and girls picked up victories.

The team then hosted Las Vegas High on Jan. 8, and the Wildcats picked up wins in both of those matches.

Boulder City's girls team narrowly fell to Las Vegas High 5-4. The Eagles won the first two games for their four-point total, but the Wildcats won the third game and had a higher total pin count (worth three points) to get the win.

Las Vegas High's boys easily knocked off Boulder City, sweeping all three games in the 9-0 win .

The losses to Las Vegas came after both Boulder City teams picked up wins against Desert Pines.

The boys eked out a 5-4 win against Desert Pines, while the girls swept the Jaguars 9-0.

The girls team is in fifth place in the Northeast Division with a 20-25 record, while the boys are in sixth place with a 14-31 record.
