Faith Lutheran football player David Sperry committed to Navy after visiting the academy in Annapolis, Md. last weekend.

Sperry, who will play defensive back for Navy, had 44 tackles and three interceptions for Faith Lutheran last fall. He was named first-team all-state for the 3A classification.

Faith Lutheran coach Jake Kothe said Sperry should play next fall for Navy without having to spend time at the academy's prep school.

"He is pretty excited about it," Kothe said. "He will fit right into their system of working hard and doing things the right way."

Sperry will join Faith Lutheran graduate Garrett Sherwood at Navy. Sherwood, who graduated in 2008, started 11 of 12 games last fall for Navy's prep team.

Sperry was also an all-state honorable mention at wide receiver, catching 35 passes for 428 yards and three touchdowns. He also had an offer from San Diego.

"He has some room to grow and some hard work in front of him," Kothe said. "But he will help them out next year in some capacity."

Ray Brewer can be reached at 990-2662 or [email protected].
